BASF Elastocoat® Polyurea
POLYUREA CHEMISTRY
In polyurea systems, MDI is used as Component A. It is characterized by “polyether amines” or “amine compounds” as polyols. This polymer system is very sensitive and does not require a catalyst; it is a self-catalyzing polymer. The reaction is usually fast (between 5 and 15 seconds) and cures well even on cold surfaces. The reaction is so fast that polyurea is normally insensitive to moisture and does not react with moisture and water present on surfaces (this is why you can see mythical videos on the internet that polyurea can be applied directly on water).
Pure polyurea ELASTOCOAT® from BASF, one of the world's leading brands
Elastocoat®, the high-tech Polyurea system for coating surfaces, is unrivalled. Whether used on parking decks, loading ramps or chemical tanks, Elastocoat® Polyurea provides permanent protection. Also for terraces and roofs, Elastocoat® quickly applies to create high-performance permanent surfaces.
BASF Elastocoat® 6335/101 – ISO 136/75 - Pure Polyurea Set
BASF Elastocoat® C 6325/124 – ISO 136/75 - Hybrid Polyurea Set
Elastocoat® is BASF’s advanced spray system for the reliable and long-term protection of all surfaces, whether wood, concrete, bitumen or steel. The high-pressure spray system can be applied to almost all substrates with a corresponding primer and cures very quickly. While other materials take a long time to fully cure, Elastocoat® becomes tack-free in just a few seconds and is completely cured within two hours. Its properties make it the ideal solution for many challenges – a fast, efficient and permanent seal.
Advantages of Elastocoat® for floor, facade and roof coatings
Provides perfect surface sealing,
Cures in seconds,
It adapts to every surface,
It is permanently elastic,
It is resistant to abrasion,
It does not slip and reduces noise.
More and more companies are choosing Elastocoat® every day.
BASF offers a variety of coating systems to suit the requirement profiles of different industry sectors. Here, Elastocoat® has proven to be a real all-rounder in a wide range of applications. With its high chemical resistance, high mechanical strength, electrical conductivity and varying degrees of slip resistance, these systems create a safe working environment when used on industrial floors and parking decks. Elastocoat® masks concrete cracks by sealing the surface under a continuous membrane for a long period of time. It provides protection against penetrating water and thus against concrete corrosion. This versatile coating seals cracks and wraps the surface like a liquid skin as a smoothly sprayed barrier coating. It dries in seconds and effortlessly seals even complex geometries and vertical surfaces.
Complex roof penetrations, skylights or air conditioning shafts are hotspots for leaks. Elastocoat® seals the affected areas. Like a liquid film, Elastocoat® adapts itself evenly to the roof surface geometry and covers it seamlessly and durably. After the surface has been prepared, the high-tech polyurea system is sprayed onto the roof. It covers and seals vertical areas. It cures in seconds.
Advantages
Extremely fast curing; load bearing after one hour
High temperature and humidity tolerance during application
Perfect sealing of penetrations and undercuts
High adhesion to substrate and primer
High crack bridging, over 400% elongation at break
High resistance to hydrolysis and aging
Exceptional mechanical and chemical resistance
Multi-storey car parks are concrete and steel structures with an open car park above and covered parking areas below. Therefore, a durable top seal of their surfaces is important. Elastocoat® is applied directly to the prepared surface with spray machines and can be opened to traffic after a short time. Elastocoat® can be sprayed as a seamless membrane. It has crack-bridging properties by adapting flexibly to concrete movements.
Advantages
Seamless and waterproof
Durable and wear-resistant
Crack bridging with flexible adaptation to concrete movements
Chemically resistant even to fluids from vehicles and engines
Tolerant to humidity and temperature in application
Fast curing, quickly putting the surface into service
Even the best facade must be protected by a BASF coating behind it
One coat of Elastocoat® is still the best protection against concrete corrosion, long-term structural weakness and moisture. As a liquid film, this system easily wraps around even complex surfaces such as roof overhangs, dome lights and shafts, creating a seamless and jointless seal. One coat of Elastocoat® pays off not only for the protection of facades but also for roofs. Flat roofs are often prone to leaks.
The easy-to-spray coating provides the roof with a jointless waterproof seal that can withstand even icy temperatures down to minus 50 degrees.
An impressive example is the roof of the arena in Astana, Kazakhstan, with a surface area of 10,000 square meters and a capacity of 30,000 spectators.
This is where developers choose Elastocoat® from BASF.
And for good reason, because the spray coating adapts perfectly to the movement and stress of the surface, thus preventing cracking. It is also waterproof, very durable, abrasion resistant, insensitive to temperature fluctuations and humidity, and absolutely chemical resistant. So if you are in Astana for the Expo in 2030, you will be able to see for yourself how well Elastocoat® stands the test of time.
To prevent chemical storage tanks from leaking into groundwater, most of these tanks are placed on or within areas called secondary containment. These are made of concrete. A coating system must be installed to prevent cracks and leaks. Elastocoat® is widely used in many industries where properties such as surface protection, chemical resistance, crack bridging and durability play an important role.
Elastocoat® can be sprayed onto and into complex structures as a seamless membrane. Its moisture tolerant chemistry allows the membrane to be installed in weather conditions where traditional materials fail, such as high humidity and low temperatures. Lining systems are often required by law, e.g. for landfills, such as the PGS 15 guideline in the Netherlands and approval according to the WHG in Germany.
Advantages
Uninterrupted even in complex structures
Very good chemical resistance
Excellent crack bridging properties
Anti-slip surface quality
Easy to cover even on vertical structures
Fast curing
Does not contain solvents or catalysts
Certified according to WHG 19
The floors of container ships are extremely stressed and pose a serious challenge for many materials, but this is not the case with Elastocoat®. The spray coating is applied smoothly, preventing delamination and cracking, remains resistant to abrasion and its performance remains unaffected by humidity and temperature fluctuations. Sewer Manholes Corrosion Protection and Durable Sealing with High-Tech Polyurea Biogenic sulphuric acid produced by Thiobacillus bacteria in gas-sealed manholes rapidly causes severe concrete corrosion. Typical signs of damage include washed concrete appearance and decomposed metal components, corrosion, crack formation and leakage. The result can be reduced durability and leaks. Acid attack is stopped with a smoothly sprayed barrier film of 2K Polyurea Elastocoat®.

With Elastocoat® spray application, previously slippery truck bed beds can be seamlessly coated for long-term slip and abrasion resistance. The system cures quickly, is scratch resistant and insulates the vehicle against noise. Loads no longer need to be additionally secured. This saves time and money, and if you need a durable, high-speed seal, Elastocoat® is the number one choice. Quiet, Durable and Grippy Trailer Floors Quiet Elastocoat® is durable as a caravan floor. Elastocoat® is optimized for these specific needs. Sprayed in a 5 mm thin layer, it extends the life of trailer floors. Non-slip polyurea also works well, while the load adheres to the rough surface and provides good grip. This often saves time and effort in securing loads.
Advantages
Reduced noise level meets the requirements of Dutch law
Longer trailer floor life
Excellent wear resistance
Simple to clean
Fast return to service
Chemical resistance to cleaning agents
High grip
